So many of us struggle to figure out who we are.
We try out all sorts of activities.
Jump from career to career.
Read one book after another.
Meet new people.
We do all of this expecting to “find” ourselves.
As though one day, we’ll be shown some image of ourselves.
Given a road map for life to follow.
A path to realizing our potential.
This perspective often reflects an impression that we’re not in control.
That who we are is not up to us.
That we need somebody or something to tell us.
While there may be some truth to that, we do have agency.
There is no moment when it’s all revealed to us.
No grand revelation of our identity.
Acute inflection point, after which we can move forward with clarity.
We are works in progress.
We are dynamic.
And we’re the ones responsible for making it happen.
For building our lives.
For making our own paths.
For shaping our identities.
There is no “finding”.
There’s only creating.
You can wait for some sort of epiphany.
You can look for inspiration.
You can do all the introspection in the world.
It won’t replace getting out there and living.
Focus less on finding yourself.
Focus on creating yourself.
Explore your heart.
What drives you?
What fills your cup?
What person do you see when you think of your ideal self?
Make it happen.
Do those things.
Be that person.
As your vision changes, you can change.
This will take time, effort, and patience.
Trial and error.
You are worthy of a most excellent life.
You are the one who can create it.
You’ve got this.
