Establishing clear, defined goals can be of great worth when it comes to sticking to our eating, training, and recovery habits for the long haul.
Goals give us something to work towards.
Goals help us define what actions and behaviors we need to adopt.
Goals keep us focused on why we’re eating well, training, prioritizing rest, and practicing mindfulness.
In some ways, though, there may be benefit in putting our goals on the back-burner.
We might find that shifting our focus away from some future outcome, and towards what we’re experiencing in the moment, is what we need at times.
Long term consistency matters when working towards improving how we look and feel.
Fat loss, strength development, and improved health take time.
However, we don’t have to wait to benefit from our work.
We don’t have to string together X number of meals or Y number of training sessions before enjoying fruits of our labor.
We can do these things because they are the best that we can do in this moment.
We can eat this next meal because we deserve to feel satisfied, energetic, and focused right now.
We can go to the gym because we deserve to feel strong, mobile, and confident right now.
We can establish a sleep routine because we deserve to feel rested and restored right now.
We can cultivate mindfulness because we deserve to feel in control of how we respond to our thoughts and emotions right now.
We can nurture positive relationships because we deserve connection and purpose right now.
Fortunately, habits such as these *do* lead towards the physical changes – fat loss, strength, and vitality – that we’re looking for.
However, these habits and behaviors aren’t simply means to an end.
They are the end.
We don’t do these things to “get” healthy.
We do these things to “be” healthy.
Once we start doing them, we’re there.
It might take some time for us to see changes in the mirror.
It might take some time for us to see changes in how our clothes fit.
It might take some time for us to see changes in our blood work.
But we can feel the benefits of these efforts right now.
During this next meal.
During this next training session.
During this next night of sleep.
We can do these things because we’re worth more than any number on the scale, pants size, or weight on the bar.
We can do these things simply because we’re worth providing our bodies the nutrients, movement, rest, and relationships we deserve.
We can do these things simply because we’re worth feeling awesome.
We don’t have to wait for that.
Go ahead and set goals.
Go ahead and visualize the person you want to be.
Go ahead and visualize the body you want to sculpt.
Just don’t forget that you are always living “right now”.
You can never escape the present.
The body you have right now is the only one you’ll ever have.
You might not look how you’d like to.
You might not feel how you’d like to.
You might not perform how you’d like to.
But you are where you are.
Make where you are the best place you can.
Because you’re worth it.
You’ve got this.
