We like the idea of “starting over”.
The idea of a new beginning.
Hitting the reset button.
We do this in many different areas of life.
We do it with our diets.
Pretty much in any situation where we make a major change.
We see ourselves as “starting over”.
In some ways, this perspective can help us move forward.
It reinforces the fact that we are more than our past.
That we are not doomed to repeat old mistakes.
That we can always grow and move forward.
In other ways, this perspective might be counterproductive.
It can create the perception that change has to be some grand effort.
Some big event.
It can also make us feel as though everything we’ve done so far is for nothing.
As if we’ve been wasting our time.
As if our lives and efforts up until now do not offer value.
The reality is that birth is the only beginning and death is the only end.
Aside from that, we’re just living our lives.
Doing what we can to make the most of them.
Day in and day out.
There is no starting over.
You are the same you.
Living the same life.
In the same body.
With all of your past behind you.
And your future ahead.
Own it all.
Love it all.
All you can do is keep going.
Keep moving forward.
Learning, growing, and putting in the work.
If you like the ideas of new beginnings, that’s totally cool.
If “starting over” helps you improve your life, that’s totally cool.
Remember, however, that you are you, and you are worthy.
With all of your mistakes.
All of your imperfections.
All of you.
That’s the foundation upon which you’re building.
That’s what you’re starting with.
It’s the only place you can ever start.
You’ve got this.
